Letting Go of Negative Emotions
Today, I’d like to invite all of you to take part in an experiment I’ve been conducting across the last 30 years and thousands of clients from my work and workshops. All it takes is your honest answer to three simple questions.
Here’s the first one: What do you want right now more than anything else? Go ahead and think it over before you read on—one magical genie wish.
If you’re like 99 percent of the people I’ve asked before, your response was some kind of circumstance in your life that you want to see changed, whether that’s money, a promotion, or an improved relationship. But after hearing the next two questions, every single one of them told me that they’d given the wrong answer.
So here they are. The second question: If you got that wish, what would it do for you? What positive change would it create in your life? And finally: If you received that positive change, how would you feel?
What I’ve come to realize is that what we really want is our answer to this final question, not the first, and I’ve had countless people over the years reaffirm that this is the case. The trouble is, we’ve got the idea that we can’t have that internal feeling unless we are able to purchase it through our external circumstances. But in reality, almost the opposite is true.
For the last 75 years or so, almost everything in the self-help world has been teaching us how to get what we want. Decide what you want, set goals, and then use your willpower to accomplish those goals. This method has been repeated endlessly and proven very, very good at selling books. The problem, of course, is that it has a 97 percent failure rate, because as reasonable as it sounds, that’s not the way we’re designed to work.
In his bestselling book, Stumbling into Happiness, Dr. Dan Gilbert of Harvard University wrote that his studies on campus had revealed a spike in physiological stress whenever the subject’s goal was to change their circumstances. As you’ll know if you’ve been following me for long, stress is the starting point for almost any illness and disease you could possible name. So not only are we wrong, we’ve got it backwards! The attitude we’ve adopted in order to get what we want is feeding us a constant drip of poison!
Over the last 18 years, I’ve discovered methods to change this and continued to refine them. This month, our new All Access program is specifically designed to help you leave your unnecessary negative emotions behind and get what you really want the most: your answer to that third question. I’ll take you by the hand and help you start living for the internal, rather than the circumstantial. Once you do that, you’ll find everything in your life changing almost like magic.
Have a blessed, wonderful day!
